Peddi is one of the biggest films of the year, slated for a grand release on 4th June, and is now facing the heat from exhibitors in the Telugu states. The movie is arriving after two postponements, and the trailer is set to release on 18th May. The film is already carrying phenomenal buzz among trade circles and audiences alike.
Theatrical Rights and Pricing Concerns
However, the major issue now is whether the film will get special show permissions and ticket price hikes like other biggies. The Telugu states theatrical rights of Peddi are valued at more than ₹170 Cr, making it one of the biggest deals ever.
Recently, big films have followed a trend where premiere ticket prices range around ₹1000, along with ₹100–₹150 hikes on existing GO ticket prices for the first 10 days. The pricing structure has become a major point of contention.
Rental vs Percentage Model Dispute
Exhibitors in both Telugu states are fighting against producers over the current system, demanding a shift from the rental model to a percentage-based system just before the release of Peddi.
Under the rental model, producers collect a fixed amount from theaters regardless of occupancy. Exhibitors argue that a percentage-based system would better distribute risk and revenue based on actual collections. The issue has now reached a peak, with exhibitors openly stating that they cannot screen films and run theatres under the current terms.
Government Permissions Pending
At the same time, the Telangana government is reportedly not giving permissions for special shows and ticket price hikes, while the producers are pushing for them considering the film’s massive scale. Similar ticket hike approvals for other big releases have faced legal and administrative hurdles in recent months.
These issues need to be resolved soon to ensure a smooth release for Peddi. It remains to be seen how Mythri Movie Makers will handle all these situations and deliver a grand release for the film.
